Based on our research, the Gabaldon building at Samar National School (SNS) is part of the broader national effort to construct Gabaldon schoolhouses during the American colonial period. These buildings were erected to support the Philippine public education system, and SNS was one of the institutions that benefited from this program.

1. Establishment of Samar National School

Based on our research, Samar National School, like many schools established during the early 20th century, received one of the Gabaldon buildings. It was originally a primary educational institution but evolved over time into a significant center for education in the region, especially in Catbalogan, Samar.

The school, founded in the early 1900s, benefitted from the Gabaldon Act (Act No. 1801), which funded the construction of durable, well-ventilated, and flood-resistant school buildings.

2. The Gabaldon Building at SNS

The Gabaldon building at Samar National School reflects the typical architectural design of the Gabaldon structures, incorporating features ideal for the tropical climate such as elevated floors, wide windows, and spacious rooms. This architectural style made education more conducive for the students by providing natural light and ventilation.

Over the years, the Gabaldon building at SNS has played a significant role in the education of thousands of students, serving as a hub for various academic and cultural activities.

3. Cultural and Historical Significance

The Gabaldon building at SNS is not just a school structure; it holds historical and cultural significance for the community. Many generations of Catbaloganons and Samarnons received their education in this iconic building, which has become a symbol of the community's dedication to learning.

Efforts to preserve this building, as part of the national movement to restore Gabaldon schools, reflect a commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage while continuing to serve as functional educational spaces.

4. Current Status

Like many other Gabaldon buildings, the one at Samar National School has likely faced challenges due to natural wear, typhoons, and earthquakes, which are common in the region. Restoration efforts, supported by legislation like Republic Act No. 11194 (Gabaldon School Buildings Conservation Act), aim to preserve such structures.

The preservation of the Gabaldon building in SNS aligns with the broader efforts to keep these historic schoolhouses functioning as educational facilities while honoring their architectural and historical value.

The Gabaldon building at Samar National School is a historical landmark that has contributed significantly to the region's educational development. Its enduring presence continues to be a reminder of the American period's influence on Philippine education and a testament to the importance of preserving historical structures in the country.
